Ask a Tulsa Debt Collection Harassment Lawyer: Is it legal for a debt collector to call you at work?

Dear Tulsa Debt Collection Harassment Lawyer:  Is it legal for a debt collector to call you at work?

Debt collectors are allowed to call you at work.  However, they may not communicate with any of your co-workers anything about the debt or that they are a debt collector.  Additionally, if you tell them, either orally or in writing, that your employer does not permit you to accept such calls, then they must never call you at work again.  This rule applies if they are calling you on your cell phone during your working hours.  If possible, you should record your conversation with the debt collector where you have informed them that your employer does not allow such calls at work.

If a debt collector has called you at work after you have told them that your employer doesn’t allow it, then you may be entitled to up to $1,000.00 damage award under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in Oklahoma.  Contact our office to arrange a free consultation.  If we decide to take your case, we’ll represent you by shifting all of our attorney fees to the debt collection agency that has violated your rights.
